Why We Refuse to Dye: The Truth Behind Candle Colorants

Why we Refuse to Dye: The Truth Behind Colorants (Text in front of image of orange powdered dye)

When I first embarked on my journey of making candles, I was sooo eager to experiment with different vibrant dyes. The allure of creating visually stunning candles was undeniable, and I couldn't wait to add a splash of color to my creations. However, as I delved deeper into research, I was confronted with a stark reality that made me rethink my approach.

If you've been with us for a while, you're aware that we avoid petroleum by-products. Many dyes on the market rely on synthetic materials derived from petroleum. These substances not only raise environmental concerns due to their manufacturing process but also pose potential health risks when burned. Burning petroleum-based products releases toxic gases and compounds into the air, which can be harmful to human health and the environment.

Now I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the word "Natural" has been getting thrown around quite loosely! Some consumers might assume that natural dyes, like mica, are a safer alternative. However, the reality is more nuanced. While mica is naturally occurring, the process of refining it for use in candles often involves additives and processing that compromise its purity. Moreover, most mica-based dyes contain titanium dioxide, which, when burned, can release harmful gases and particles into the air.

Now, the sourcing of mica presents another layer of ethical complexity. The largest mining areas for mica is India and Madagascar, where illegal mining practices, including child labor, persist. By using mica-based dyes, companies inadvertently contribute to this exploitative industry. Don't just take my word for it! Conduct a Google search or browse YouTube.

At LEWA Candle Co., my journey has led me to prioritize transparency and integrity in our ingredients. By avoiding dyes altogether, we ensure that our candles remain as close to nature as possible. Our commitment extends beyond aesthetics. It's about crafting products that align with our values of sustainability, safety, and social responsibility.

While colorful candles may seem appealing, it's essential to consider the broader implications of the ingredients used. By opting for dye-free candles, you're not just making a choice for your home's but also promoting a healthier environment and supporting ethical practices. That's why we're committed to using only quality ingredients in our products.

Thank you so much for choosing LEWA Candle Co.
