So let’s break it down: soy, paraffin, beeswax, and coconut wax...what’s the deal, and why does it matter?
Soy Wax:
Soy wax gets a lot of love. It’s plant-based, renewable, and often marketed as the healthier choice. But here's the twist: over 90% of soybeans in the U.S. are produced by......you guessed it! Monsanto (now Bayer), the same folks behind RoundUp. Yep, THAT RoundUp. If you recall, they were in hot water for the pesticide that caused cancer! So while you're trying to create a serene, spa-like vibe at home, you might actually be burning residual pesticides into your air.
Paraffin Wax:
Paraffin wax is the go-to for most big box candles because it’s cheap and easy to work with. But here’s the catch: it’s a byproduct of petroleum (yes, the same stuff we put in our cars), and when burned, it can release chemicals like benzene and toluene...both linked to respiratory issues and even cancer. Plus, it’s a champion soot producer. So unless you want your walls and lungs looking like the inside of a chimney, maybe skip the paraffin.
Beeswax:
Beeswax is like that low-key friend who always shows up, smells amazing, and never causes drama. It’s made by honeybees (thanks, bees!) and burns clean with a light, sweet scent. No hidden chemicals, no soot, just natural goodness. Plus, it’s renewable☝🏾.
Coconut Wax:
Coconut wax is the newer wax on the block, and it’s making big waves. It burns slowly and cleanly, holds fragrance, and gives off a beautiful creamy finish. Made from the oil of coconuts, it’s sustainable, biodegradable, and just plain luxurious.
