Back to School. Back to Self-Care.

This morning, while I was ironing school clothes (because of course, I didn’t do it last night), I had a moment of reflection: I’m almost 41! I may look young, but my body sure doesn’t feel that way! I’m older, a little more tired, and definitely not the same mom I was when I first started this parenting journey.

Now that all four of my boys are in school (the youngest just started Kindergarten 🎉), mornings are busy. Add in helping hubby get out the door, and by the time everyone’s gone, the house is actually a little quiet (still got my dogs). It's been a while since I've been alone..it's different. But now is the time to take advantage of some well needed self-care.

Now my husband and boys “stole” some of my built-in workouts. Carrying groceries? My sons do that now. Walking the dogs? Yep, they’ve got that covered too. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the help, but I missed that movement. So now, I take longer walks with the dogs when I can, and I’ve built exercise back into my day...about 45 minutes to an hour, five days a week. I even try to add a Saturday mile run. See I said "Try!" So far, my weekends haven't been going as planned..but I haven't given up on the dream!

And you know what? It feels good. Growing up, I was an athlete...track, basketball, tennis, you name it. Moving your body clears your mind and gives you energy, especially when life feels stretched thin.

But self-care isn’t just about exercise for me. It’s about slowing down and also finding ways to relax. Lately, that’s been lighting a candle and letting the scent shift the energy in my space. Followed by a shower that starts warm and ends cold (yes, it’s a shock, but it’s amazing for circulation, energy, and mood). Or it’s sinking into a nice warm bath with one of my natural bath bombs, then lathering up in body butter to make my skin feel soft and cared for.

That’s the kind of care I’m learning to prioritize. It's not over-the-top, not once-a-year, but the everyday choices to remind me I matter.

So here’s my reminder to you (and to myself): make time for yourself. Even if it’s just five quiet minutes. Even if it’s just lighting a candle. Because we can’t keep pouring into everyone else if we’re running on empty.

I’m older, a little more tired, but definitely wiser. And one thing I know for sure...self-care isn’t optional. It’s essential. Especially as the years go by.
